Mr. Sammie Edward Sanders was born on February 22, 1943, in Rembert, South Carolina. He was the eldest child of John William and Pearline Alston Sanders. He was blessed to have seven siblings: Boykin, Mazieola, William (Bill), Felicia, Pearl, Leverne, and Dempsey. As the first-born child, Sammie loved and cared for his siblings deeply. Sammie was educated in the public schools of Sumter County and attended Ebenezer High School where he developed lifelong friendships with Mr. Lewis Walker and other fellow graduates of the Class of 1961. Sammie accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior at an early age and was baptized at the Rafting Creek Missionary Baptist Church where his father and mother were faithful servants. Sammie spent much of his early years at the home of his loving grandmother, Mrs. Henrietta Williams Sanders, and his father’s siblings, Thomas (Bubba), Sue, Mary, and Bessie. Sammie grew up in the Rembert community and learned from his father and mother the value of hard work, compassion, a giving spirit, and a commitment to family. Whatever his parents had, they shared with others. Through their example, Sammie learned that riches and success meant nothing if your fellow brothers and sisters were without. In 1966, Sammie met Annie Jane Jones of Lake City, South Carolina. Sammie was working a job in Lake City with Jane’s brother, Jim. After work, Jim was walking four miles home when Sammie drove up and asked if he wanted a ride home. This is when Sammie saw Jane for the first time. Jim recalled, “That’s just the type of person Sammie was. A lot of people I knew drove by while I was walking and he was the only one to stop and offer me a ride.” Sammie and Jane were married on August 26, 1966, and were blessed with five daughters, whom Sammie affectionately referred to as “Jane and her Five Fabulous Foxes.” As a young man, Sammie began working in concrete finishing. In 1971, he stepped out on faith and started his own business, Sanders Concrete Finishing Company. Sammie ran his own business until he retired in 2017. Sammie’s business was highly successful due to his commitment to excellence and getting the job done right! During his more than 40 years in business, Sanders Concrete contracted with large construction companies like M.B. Kahn and Sharp Construction to construct large shopping centers, hospitals, hotels, schools, and homes across South Carolina, North Carolina, and Georgia. The company worked on the stadiums at Clemson University and the University of South Carolina. Following his parents’ Christian example, Sammie used his business to employ many relatives and other young men in the Rembert community. He also taught the skill of concrete finishing to many young men who would go on to start their own businesses. Sammie truly believed that when you move forward, you take your brother’s hand and move him forward with you. Sammie spent most of his days working hard to provide for his family and other loved ones. In his leisure time, he loved spending time with his family and friends. Sammie loved to laugh, and he loved to make people laugh. He also enjoyed fishing, hunting, and working on and driving his antique cars, which included a 1931 Model A Ford and a 1949 Plymouth Special Deluxe. Sammie loved his friends and family deeply and was always proud to be a Sanders. On June 3, 2025, at 4:05 a. m., Sammie Edward Sanders transitioned peacefully at NHC Health Care in Sumter, South Carolina. He was predeceased by his loving wife of more than 49 years, his parents, and his siblings, Leverne, Mazieola, and Dempsey. Sammie was a devoted son, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend, who leaves to cherish his memories: his daughters, Sarah (Murray) Tindal of Sumter; Loraine Sanders of Rembert; Ophelia (Stephen) Staton of Creedmoor, NC; Marla Sanders of Rembert; Jamie Sanders of Rembert; and Samecia Sanders of Columbia.
