Roachell Martin Jr., went home to be with the Lord peacefully on Saturday, September 7, 2024 at Lexington Medical Center, Columbia, SC. He was born on February 9, 1940 to the late Roachell Martin Sr. and Amelia Dubose Martin. He was married to the late Ella Mae Bradford-Martin for 60 years. “Junior”, as he was affectionately called, was raised in a Christian home. He was a lifelong member of Mt. Olive A.M.E. Church in Woodrow, where he served as a steward, class leader, usher and a member of the finance committee. He was a life member of Gum Spring Lodge # 458, Prince Hall Affiliated, Bishopville. Junior had a love for animals at a young age and pursued a farm which required long hours, hard work, and dedication. He was a farm laborer for over 70 plus years and took pride in carrying for his livestock. Junior was a devoted classic family man. He never met a stranger. Every person he came in contact with, he saw them as “good people”. He was a pillar in his community and his generosity touched lives of countless individuals. Junior leaves to cherish precious memories: three daughters, Francena Spann and Roberta Martin of Sumter, Dorothy Martin of the home; two sons, Roachell Martin and Timothy Martin of the home; fourteen grandchildren; four of whom were raised in the home, Jamie (Sharlene) Martin, Latroy Martin, Kendall (Ashley) Martin, and Felisha (Bryan) Martin-bell; thirty two great grandchildren; four brothers, Samuel Martin Sr., Raymond Martin, and William Martin, all of Sumter, James Martin of Philadelphia, PA; two sisters, Ada Brunson of Sumter, and Geneva Sexton of Charlotte, NC; two brothers-in-law, Warren (Dorothy) Bradford of Sumter, and Samuel (Stephanie) Bradford of Charlotte, NC; three sisters-in-law, Sadie Bradford, Carolyn Mickens, both of Sumter, and Willie Mae Martin of Rembert; extended family, James and Katie Mahoney of Sumter; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Services will be held 2:00 p. m., Friday, September 13, 2024 at Mt. Olive AME Church, 2738 Woodrow Road, Woodrow, with the Rev. Dr. R. L. Brown, pastor, Rev. Jacob McLeod, pastor of New Hope United Methodist Church, McBee, Eulogist. Burial will follow in the Colclough Cemetery, Dubose Siding Road, Sumter. The family is receiving relatives and friends at the home, 635 Hatfield Road, Dalzell.
