Ernest J. Porter Sr., 102, widow of Hattie McNair and Rosa Lee Levan, passed away May 15, 2024 at Sumter East Health and Rehabilitation Center, Sumter, SC. Born March 27, 1922, Sumter, SC, Ernest was the son of the late David and Anna Porter. He was a World War ll Army Veteran and served in Okinawa. After returning home, Ernest worked as a carpenter at the Palmetto Pigeon Plant in Sumter and later relocated to Danbury, Connecticut where he worked as a machine operator for the Borden Ballo Bearing Company and retired after 30 years of faithful service. Ernest returned to Sumter after retirement,was a member of St. James United Methodist Church and shared his talents for carpentry and painting in the community. Funeral services will be held 11 a. m., Wednesday, May 22, 2024, in the John Wesley Williams Sr. Memorial Chapel of Williams Funeral Home, 821 North Main Street, Sumter, with the Rev. Cheryl Johnson, Officiating. Burial will follow in the Hillside Memorial Park, Sumter.
