On Saturday, May 4, 2024, Reverend Earther McCloud-Joe was called home. The world has lost an incredible loving and caring mother, sister, grandmother, great grandmother, and servant leader of God. As a servant leader, Reverend Joe, as she was affectionately called, was a dedicated and caring educator and pastor. Reverend Joe was born on March 24, 1939, in Sumter, South Carolina to the late Sam Baker, Sr., and Lucile Muldrow Baker. She was educated in the Public Schools of Sumter, South Carolina, and is an alum of Morris College. She spent her early life in Elizabeth, New Jersey raising her family and working first as a seamstress, then as a dietician’s assistant for a Alexian Brothers Hospital in Elizabeth, New Jersey. In 1980, she relocated back to South Carolina, and began her career as an educator with the Kershaw County School District. Rev. Joe was part of the Christian Athletic Group at Camden High School where she served as an advisory counselor to group members. Shortly after, she was called into the ministry and began her life as a servant leader for God. She was the former pastor of St. Michael A.M.E. Church in Wedgefield, SC. During her tenure at St. Michael, she guided and inspired her congregation to use their love for God to conduct outreach support to the community. Rev. Joe’s next assignment was to Pastor Quinn Chapel A.M.E. Church in Sumter, SC. This was a tremendous honor for her to pastor her home church. Reverend Joe was a phenomenal woman of God, who wore many hats in her willingness to serve God and to help anyone in need. She was a humanitarian at heart. Her ability to understand the needs of others and empower them to develop their own unique talent and abilities to transform their communities is the legacy she leaves with us. This legacy has left an indelible mark on the community in which she served. Reverend Earther McCloud-Joe was preceded in death by her husband, Mozell Joe and her son, John Edward McCloud, as well as her four brothers, James Baker, Sam Baker, Jr., Eli Baker and Albert Baker and four sisters, Martha Ree Baker, Annie Bell English, Annette Brooks and Joan Brown. She is survived by three brothers, John Ray Baker, Victor C. Baker and Jerry Baker of Sumter, SC; three sisters, Lucile Gailliard of Sumter, SC, Francine Samuel and Lurine Samuel both of Columbia, SC and four sisters-in-law, Joan Baker, Cora Baker, Shirley Baker and Tina Baker. (Thomasena) Myers, Sr. of Camden, SC and Christopher (Keta) Myers of Bridgewater, NJ.
