Amelia Ramsey Nickens departed her earthly life on June 26, 2023, at MUSC Hospital in Charleston. She was born on October 14, 1950, in Sumter County, to the late Rev. David Ramsey and Elmeta Alston Ramsey. Amelia was educated in the public schools in Sumter County. She was a 1971 graduate of Hillcrest High School. She obtained her cosmetology license at Sumter Beauty College. Amelia was the operator and owner of her own beauty salon. She retired from Becton Dickinson after 31 years of service. Amelia was an active member of Grant Hill Missionary Baptist Church, where she was a Sunday School teacher, advisor for the youth choir, YWA past president, Senior Missionary, Adult & Senior Choir, Praise & Worship Ministry, Usher ministry, and Trustee Ministry. Amelia was the exercise instructor at Catchall-Shaw Community Center. She was a coach for Northwestern Rural Basketball Church League. Amelia enjoyed life to her fullest by attending the local basketball & football games. She enjoyed traveling domestically and internationally with her family. Amelia was known as “Meal” and had a passion for learning and teaching line dancing. Amelia leaves a precious legacy for her family and many more. Mrs. Nickens is survived by her devoted husband of 53 years, Dennis Nickens III; her loving children, Sharron Jones (Gerald J), Dennis Nickens IV (Barbara) of Charlotte, NC. In addition to raising her two nephews as her own, Terrance Bradley (Kina) of Locus Grove GA, and Shannon Davis (Monisha) of Dalzell; her grandchildren, Xavier Jones, Ebony Jones of Charlotte, NC, Shania Davis, Micah Davis, Sheldon Davis of Dalzell, Na’ Jae Bradley, Trayvon Bradley of Locus Grove, GA, Isaiah Caroll, Eliajh Caroll of Charlotte, NC; one sister, Juanita Ramsey Deas (Elbert); one brother, Louis Ramsey of Sumter; four sisters-in-law, Mae Ethel Nickens, Ella Teamoney (Jeremiah T), Earnestine Jenkins (Ronald J), Marie Ramsey; one brother-in-law, Thomas Nickens (Veronica N) all of Sumter, and a host of niece, nephews, other relatives, and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Leroy Ramsey, Johnny Ramsey, David Ramsey Jr. and four sisters, Mary Ellen R. Fries, May B. Jones, Nettie R. Gains, and Betty Lue Ramsey. In accordance with the COVID-19 guidelines, the family is requesting that face masks and social distancing be observed by relatives and friends during visitations from 4:00 – 8:00 p. m., at the home 870 Mayfield Drive, Sumter. Funeral services will be held 1:00 p. m., Monday, July 3, 2023, at Grant Hill Missionary Baptist Church, 5405 Black River Road, Rembert, with the Rev. Clifton Witherspoon, Pastor, Eulogist. The Remains will be placed in the church at 12:00 noon for viewing until time of services. The procession will leave the home at 12:15 p. m. Burial will follow in the Hillside Memorial Park, 2561 Cain’s Mill Road, Sumter.
