Marion James Cabbagestalk, the son of the late Henry and Mary Mickens Cabbagestalk, was born on March 28, 1942 in Sumter. He departed this life on Tuesday, May 9, 2023. He was educated in the public schools of Sumter County. He joined Mt. Olive A. M. E. Church at a very young age. James worked for over 60 years as a livestock and agricultural farmer for Mr. Jerry Paige and Rivers Farm. He spent his retirement days doing what he loved, watching westerns, gardening and doing yard work. He grew the biggest and best collards around. James had an infectious laugh and was a mild-mannered man who never had a harsh word for anyone. He leaves to cherish his precious memories: his common law spouse, Berince McMillon Ray; four daughters, Earline (Jose) Maccou of Sumter, Helen Vaughn of Tampa, Fla, Mary Ann Ray and Naomi Ray of Sumter; two sons, Freddie Ray of Sumter, and Nathaniel Ray of Avon Park, Fla.; siblings include, two sisters, Elsie (James) Jennings and Carrie (Bobby) Tention; one brother, Willie Robert (Louette) Cabbagestalk; nine grandchildren; six great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews that he loved unconditionally along with an abundance of friends. In accordance with the COVID-19 guidelines, the family is requesting that face masks and social distancing be observed by relatives and friends during visitations at the home, 5445 Colclough Plantation Road, Sumter. Funeral services will be held 2:00 p. m., Saturday, May 13, 2023, at the Mt. Olive A. M. E. Church, 2738 Woodrow Road, Woodrow, with the Rev. Dr. R. L. Brown, Pastor, Eulogist. The procession will leave the home at 1:30 p. m. Burial will be in the Evergreen Memorial Park, 802 North Guignard Drive, Sumter.
