Almena Lawson Woods, 79, daughter of the late Moses Lawson and Carrie Cook Lawson, was born on February 5, 1944. She departed this life peacefully on Friday, March 24, 2023 at her home. Almena attended Fleming Public School in Lynchburg. At an early age, she became a member of Mt. Pleasant A. M. E. Church in Elliott. She had a great passion for cooking. Her skills were highly recognized as she held positions at Frank’s Truck Stop and Noon-Dog Café. Almena later ventured into her own business and became co-owner of A & B Restaurant located on Manning Avenue, Sumter. She leaves behind eight wonderful children to cherish and hold on to her memories: two sons, L. J. Woods of Charlotte, N. C., Leon (Deloris) Woods of Mayesville; six daughters, Ruth Woods of the home, Carrie L Woods, Angelina Woods and Maeschell (Roger) Smith of Sumter, Rose M. Woods of Union City, GA and Jennie (Reginald) Carr of Acworth, GA; five sisters, Elizabeth (Theodore) Sharper, Betty Jean Lawson, Eloise Lawson, Margaret Sumter and Patricia Lawson of Sumter; two sisters-in-law, Mary Lee Lawson of Mayesville, and Lillie Mae Lawson of Sumter; twenty four grandchildren; twenty two great-grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She was proceeded in death by her eldest son, Nathaniel Lawson; parents, Moses and Carrie Cook Lawson; five brothers, Joseph Lawson, Moses Lawson, James Henry Lawson, Louis Lawson and Birdie Lawson, and one sister, Ada Mae Hall. In accord with the COVID 19 guidelines, the family is requesting that face masks and social distancing be observed by relatives and friends during visitation at the home, 74 Bethune Park Drive, Mayesville. Celebration of Life Services will be held Saturday, April 1, 2023 – 1:00 p. m. at Galilee Missionary Baptist Church, 126 East Sumter Street, Mayesville, with the Rev. Eugene Myers, Jr., Pastor, Eulogist. The Remains will be placed in the church at 12:00 Noon for viewing until time of services. The procession will leave the home at 12:30 p. m. Burial will be in the Mayesville Community Cemetery, Mayesville.
