Mable Deloris Helton was born October 1, 1927, in Sumter County, to the late Ben Helton and Eunice Capers Helton. She departed this life on March 5, 2023 in New Jersey. She graduated from Morris College High School and received her bachelor’s degree from Morris College. Upon graduation, she embarked upon a lifetime career of teaching which first started in South Carolina. She taught for several years in both Hampton and Lee Counties. At an early age, Mable joined Bethlehem Presbyterian Church and worked diligently in various capacities until she transitioned to Newark, New Jersey. During her time in New Jersey, she taught preschool and elementary school in the Newark School District. In 1995, after making the decision to retire, she moved back home to Oswego, built a beautiful home and cared for her mother until her death. During this time, she remained steadfast in continuing her journey of faith by becoming a member of New Covenant Presbyterian Church in Sumter. Mable was devoted to her family. Daughter, sister, aunt, and teacher, Mable will be greatly missed by her family. Those she leaves to cherish her memories include four sisters, Ernestine Brown, Audrey (Seigel) Jackson, Barbara Hagans, Blundell Harris all of New Jersey; one brother, Freddie Helton of South Carolina, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. In accord with the COVID 19 guidelines, the family is requesting that face masks and social distancing be observed by relatives and friends during visitation at the home, 1060 Goodson Road, Sumter. Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 11, 2023, 12:00 noon at New Covenant Presbyterian Church USA, with the Pastor Elijah Washington, Officiating. Burial will be in the New Covenant Church Cemetery, Martin Town Road, Sumter.
