Carolyn Glasscho Smith, daughter of the late Wilbur Glasscho and Louise Burgess Glasscho, was born March 29, 1952 in Kingstree. She attended the public schools of Sumter County and graduated from Sumter High School with the elite Class of 1971. She got married in 1972 to the late Isaac Bradley, from their union they had one son. Later she married Jurnell Smith Jr. and from that union came one boy and two girls. Carolyn loved her family and spent the next sixteen years in the home as a loving homemaker and wife. Carolyn began her career outside of the home on February 2, 1994 as an assistant teacher at Crosswell Elementary School in Sumter, South Carolina. She moved to several schools before retiring on June 1, 2017 to spend time with her family. Once retired, she was able to spend time with her newborn grandson and her favorite hobbies of gardening and taking care of her home until Alzheimer’s took its toll in May of 2021. Carolyn Glasscho Smith transitioned on Monday, January 30, 2023 at Medical University of South Carolina in Columbia, South Carolina. Ms. Smith is survived by two sons and two daughters, Vincent Bradley of Wakiki, Hawaii, Trenice Smith of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Deidra Smith of Eunice, S. C., and Kendra Smith (Foster Godbold, Jr.) of Latta, S. C.; one grandson, Bobby Jeremiah Godbold; three sisters, Gloria Carter, Sylvia Glasscho, both of Sumter, S. C. and Mary Scriven of Whiteville, N. C.; five brothers, Wilbert Lee, Charles, Joe Louis, Michael and Alphonza, all of Sumter; a special friend; several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends to include the remaining classmates of the first integrated Class of Sumter High School of 1971. In addition to her mother and father, she was preceded in death by her brother, Anthony Glasscho (4/27/16) and her sisters, Linda G. Gaines (3/15/18) and Anna L. Witherspoon (1/22/23). In accordance with the COVID-19 guidelines, the family is requesting that face masks and social distancing be observed by relatives and friends during visitations at the home, 447 East Charlotte Avenue, Sumter. Funeral services will be held 12:00 noon, Friday, February 3, 2023 at Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church, 805 South Harvin Street, Sumter, with the Rev. Dr. Marion H. Newton, Senior Pastor, officiating, the Rev. Eugene Dennis, pastor of Joshua Baptist Church, Eulogist. The Remains will be placed in the church at 11:00 a. m. for viewing until time of services. The procession will leave the home at 11:30 a. m.
