Eliza Hudson Jones, daughter of the late Sampson Hudson and Flossie Herrington Hudson, was born on September 6, 1941, in Lee County, South Carolina. Eliza graduated from Mount Pleasant High School. Eliza left South Carolina and moved to Mount Vernon, New York. There she met and later married Charlie S. Jones and created a home in Prince George’s County, MD and blessed with two daughters. Eliza raised her daughters in the church and was a faithful member of Gethsemane Baptist Church, Mitchellville, MD. Eliza had a passion for cooking and was exceptional at it. She loved creating meals and baking for her family every day. To some of her friends she was famous for her red velvet cake, but Eliza loved to make a good pound cake. She also loved to sew and often made her daughters and dresses for herself to attend church and other events. Eliza enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren. She would visit them all and take her granddaughters during the summer to their family reunion. Loving to show them off. Eliza returned home to Sumter, in 2001. After settling in, she became a faithful member of Unionville AME Church. She continued her life in Sumter and departed this life Tuesday, January 3, 2023, at Prisma Health Toumey Hospital, Sumter. Eliza’s beautiful life will forever be cherished in the lives of her children, Gina (Ellington) Jones, and LaKesha Jones, both of Prince George’s County, MD; son-in-law, Earl Ellington; three grandchildren, Abdul and Erin Ellington and Taia Graham; one great grandchild, Nola Rose Cloutterbuck; three sisters, Rosa Johnson, Georgia (Davis) Ocran, and Lucille Hudson along with a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. She was proceeded in death by other beloved siblings. In accord with the COVID 19 guidelines, the family is requesting no visitation at the home. Viewing with visitation will be Saturday, January 14, 2023, 10:00 – 11:00 a. m., followed by funeral services at 11:00 a. m. in the John Wesley William Sr. Memorial Chapel of Williams Funeral Home, Inc., 821 North Main Street, Sumter, with the Rev. Laddie N. Howard, Officiating. Burial will be in the Unionville A. M. E. Church Yard Cemetery, 1330 Swimming Pen Road, Mayesville.
