Mamie Magnolia Peterson, daughter of the late Douglas Peterson, Sr. and Corine Blanding Peterson, was born on April 19, 1931. She was called to eternal rest on December 13, 2022. Mamie received her education in the public schools of Sumter and Coulter Academy in Cheraw. She received a Bachelor of Science degree in elementary education from Morris College with additional studies at Kean University in New Jersey. Mamie was employed as a second grade teacher by Newark Public Schools for over 30 years. Her administrators and colleagues highly respected her teaching skills. In fact, some of her co-workers brought their children to the school and placed them in her classroom. Mamie’s classroom was a showcase classroom of distinction. She was a life long member of Antioch United Methodist Church, where she was a faithful member of the United Women of Faith (formerly United Methodist Women). After her retirement, she returned to Sumter where she lovingly took care of her mother until her mother’s death. Her loving memories will be cherished by her sister, Ruby Oakes of Irvington, NJ; sister-in-law, Mary Sue Peterson of Sumter, a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. In accordance with the COVID-19 guidelines, the family is requesting that face masks and social distancing be observed by relatives and friends during visitation at the home of her niece, 410 Derek Drive, Sumter.. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, December 20, 2022 – 11:00 a. m. at Antioch United Methodist Church, 4040 Dubose Siding Road, Sumter with the Rev. Marvis Stewart, pastor. The procession will leave the home at 10:20 a. m. Burial will be in the Antioch United Methodist Church Cemetery, Highway 15 South, Sumter.
