Devoted family man and teacher, Dr. Stephen Tyndall Bishoff of Sumter died November 30, 2022. Steve was born January 25, 1949, to Dr. Rhoslyn J. and Dorothy T. Bishoff in West Grove, Pennsylvania. The family relocated to Dover, Delaware, where Steve graduated from Dover High School. He then attended Washington and Jefferson College where he was a member of Delta Tau Delta Fraternity and the Pershing Rifle Team. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology. Steve served in the United States Army as a medic and later a nurse. He received a Master of Education from the University of Southern California and taught at Fayetteville State University. Steve earned a Ph. D. in Biology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1989. He then was a post-doctoral fellow at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. His love of Biology and teaching led to his dedicated career as a Biology Professor at the University of South Carolina Sumter Campus. Steve taught at USC-Sumter for 27 years before retiring in 2018. He later taught Biology at St. Francis Xavier High School in Sumter until 2020. He was a dynamic and involved teacher and often remarked at how much he learned from his students. Steve married his best friend and graduate school lab partner, Debbie, ant the couple welcomed their daughter Megan in 2001. He was predeceased by his father Ross Bishoff and is survived by his wife and daughter, his mother and his brother, T. Michael Bishoff of Lewes, Delaware. In accordance with the COVID-19 guidelines, the family is requesting no visitation at the home. A memorial service celebrating Steve’s life will be held at St. Anne Catholic Church, 216 East Liberty Street, Sumter on Friday, December 16, 2022 at 1:00 p. m. In lieu of flowers, please consider giving to the Bishoff Scholarship Endowment (B11052) at USC-Sumter, 200 Miller Road, Sumter, S. C. 29150, which annually helps a perspective nursing student defray some of the costs of education.
