Mother Dorothy Richardson Epps, widow of Caesar Epps, was born August 8, 1927 to the late Alexander Richardson and Alma Jenkins-Richardson. She departed this earthly life Wednesday, July 20, 2022 at Sumter Health and Rehab. Mother Epps was educated in the public schools of Sumter County. She was a great cook and homemaker and did domestic work for many years. Mother Epps was a lifelong member of St. Matthews Missionary Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Missionary Department and Senior Choir. Mother Dorothy Epps was loving and caring to her family, and all she came in contact with. She was a friend to all. Mother Epps was preceded in death by her husband, her parents; two brothers: Lewis Cook and Major Richardson, five sisters: Juanita Cook, Frances Gredic, Virginia Mitchell, Carrie Lawson and Harriet Richardson. Precious memories of Mother Epps will continue to be cherished by her family: one son, David (Edna) Richardson of Atlantic City, NJ; her grandchildren; great grandchildren; her caregivers, nephews John Richardson, Sr. of the home and Marcus Lawson, and niece, Betty Jean Lawson, and a host of other nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. In accordance with the COVID-19 guidelines, the family is requesting that face masks and social distancing be observed by relatives and friends during all visitations at the home, 34 Gable Court, Sumter. Funeral services will be held 2:00 p. m., Saturday, July 30, 2022 at St. Matthews Missionary Baptist Church, 1690 South Guignard Parkway, Sumter, with the Rev. Calvin K. Hastie, Sr., pastor. The procession will leave the home at 1:20 p. m. Burial will be in the Evergreen Memorial Park, 802 North Guignard Drive, Sumter.
