Our mother, Geneva H. McCoy, affectionately known as “Neva”, was born on February 11, 1938 in Sumter, to the late Frizeal Nelson and George Whitmore. She was the oldest of twelve children. She was educated in the Sumter County School District. She was called home early on the morning of June 26, 2022 while surrounded by her family. Our special angel breathed her last breath, prepared her wings and too flight. Geneva married her husband, Willie McCoy and from that union three children were born. The family moved to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1956, where her work career began. Geneva was employed by several businesses including: Downs Carpet and VIZ Electronics in Philadelphia .Geneva accepted the Lord at an early age and was an active member at Moores Memorial Baptist Church while living in Philadelphia, PA. After retiring and returning to Sumter, Geneva joined Trinity Missionary Baptist Church in 1998 and began her cooking career at the Piggly Wiggly on Pinewood Road and Trinity Missionary Baptist Church, family functions and reunions. One of Geneva’s earliest love was creating and sewing items for her daughter from her pajamas as a child to her daughter’s senior prom attire. Cooking was another passion that brought her joy and happiness. She leaves behind to celebrate her life and mourn her passing: her daughter, Velda; two sons, Talbert and Jeffrey; one grandson, Wesley McCoy; one granddaughters, Londyn McCoy; two sisters, Lillie and Peggy Nelson of Sumter; three brothers, Stanley Nelson of Kansas, Gary Nelson of Sumter, and Terrance Murray of Dalzell, S. C.; one uncle, Clarence Hayward (Diane) of Philadelphia, PA, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. In accordance with the COVID 19 guidelines, the family is requesting that face masks and social distancing be observed by relatives and friends during visitation at the home, 2290 Clematis Trail, Sumter. Funeral services will be held 11:30 a. m., Saturday, July 2, 2022 at Trinity Missionary Baptist Church, 155 Wall Street, Sumter, with the Rev. Larry C. Weston, pastor, Eulogist. The Remains will be placed in the church at 10:30 a. m. for viewing until time of services. The procession will leave the home at 10:50 a. m. Burial will be in the Evergreen Memorial Park, 802 North Guignard Drive, Sumter.
