John James Brooks Jr., son of the late John J. Brooks, Sr. and Lucille Mobley Brooks, was born January 5, 1949 in Lancaster. John departed this life on Saturday, July 31, 2021. John was a graduate of Ebenezer High School, Class of 1967. In August of 1968, he joined the United States Army, where he served honorably and bravely in the Vietnam War as a wheeled vehicle mechanic. John, affectionately known for being a lover of all type of cars, he also loved building model cars and watching old western movies. John was employed at South Carolina Department of Corrections for over 30 years where he started out as a correctional officer and progressed quickly through the ranks, and retired as Associate Warden of Programs at Lee Correctional Institution. John was a member of Joshua Baptist Church, where he served on the Trustee and the Pastor’s Aid Ministry. John was married to the love of his life, Gloria “Pat” Deas Brooks for 49 years. He leaves to cherish his memories: four children, Reginald L. Brooks of Huntsville, AL, Mary Prescott of Atlanta, GA, Corey J. Brooks of Salisbury, NC, Vincent J. (Keyanna) Brooks of Sumter; two brothers, Conrad (Delores) Brooks of Wedgefield and Dean L. Brooks of Concord, NC; four sisters-in-law, Linda Deas of Brooklyn, NY, Carol Deas, Cassie Deas, Barbara Dease of Sumter; two brothers-in-law, Elbert (Juanita) Deas, Norris (Barbara) Deas of Sumter; nine grandchildren; six great grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. John was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Stanley Brooks. In accordance with the COVID -19 guidelines, the family is requesting that face masks and social distancing be observed by relatives and friends during visitation at the home, 3990 Camden Highway, Dalzell. Funeral services will be held 11:00 a. m., Monday, August 9, 2021 at Joshua Baptist Church Recreational Outreach Center, 5200 Live Oak Road, Dalzell, with the Rev. Eugene G. Dennis, pastor, officiating. The procession will leave at 10:20 a. m. from the home. Burial will be in the Joshua Baptist Church Yard Cemetery.
