Tonya Michelle Edwards was born September 11, 1972 in Sumter to Sammie Generette and the late Betty Edwards Generette. She departed this life on Saturday, June 5, 2021 at the Medical University, Charleston. Tonya, as she was affectionately called, received her formal education in the public schools of Sumter County, graduating with the Class of 1990 from Sumter High School. Upon graduation, she attended Central Carolina Technical College presuming a degree in Phlebotomy. Her work career consisted of various places of employment related to her health. At an early age, she joined Mt. Olive A. M. E. Church. Later in 1994, under the leadership of the late Reverend A. D. Dennis, she joined Joshua Missionary Baptist Church, where she worked with various ministries: the Ushers, Sunday School, Youth Department, Calendar Rally and the Missionary Ministry. She was a faithful and dedicated member until her health failed. Tonya attended St. John Missionary Baptist Church, where she often taught the young people Sunday School class. She was blessed with a talent to sing and she used it frequently while at St. John. Her memories will live on in the lives of her children, Marcus Devon Edwards and Michael Javon Miller of the home; a god daughter, Michelle Rock; her father, Sammie Generette; a brother, Michael (Hershell) Edwards; a sister, Sandra G. Polite; two special brothers, Christopher and Joshua McCoy, all of Sumter; five aunts; three uncles; a host of other relatives and friends. In accordance with the COVID -19 guidelines, the family is requesting no visitation at the home. Funeral services will be held 11:00 a. m., Saturday, June 12, 2021 at Joshua Missionary Baptist Church, 5200 Live Oak Road, Dalzell, with the Rev. Eugene G. Dennis, Officiating. Burial will be in the Joshua Missionary Baptist Church Yard Cemetery. Funeral procession will leave from the home at 10:20 a. m.
