James Edward Joe, 63, husband of Calpernia Holloman Joe and son of the late Robert and Mamie Cook Joe, was born September 19, 1957 in Bishopville. James answered his call from labor to reward on Monday, February 9, 2021 in Sumter. James, affectionately known as “Jody”, attended the public schools of Lee County and was a graduate of Ashwood Central High School. Upon graduating from High School, James enlisted in the United States Army. While serving his country, James was promoted to the rank of Sergeant. James returned home to Bishopville and continued his education at Central Carolina Technical College in Sumter, where he received his CDL to operate tractor trailer. James was able to retire after 25 years of being employed with the Boyd Brothers and Senn Freight Lines. James was a faithful member of the Mechanicsville United Methodist Church. He used his God given musical talents singing with Mechanicsville Gospel Choir and the Hill Boys Gospel Group. A man of prayer, faith and order, James served as the Chaplin for the Catchall Masonic Lodge. James leaves to cherish his memories: his wife of 39 years, Calpernia of the home; three daughters, Bernetta, Bernitha and Leah Joe; one son, US Army PFC Ja’Bez James Joe and a grandson, Khyler Joe, all of Sumter; two brothers, John Joe of Bishopville and Jesse Joe of Sumter; a host of sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends to mourn his passing. In accordance with the COVID -19 guidelines, the family will only be accepting telephones calls and drop offs. Funeral services will be held 2:00 p. m., Monday, February 15, 2021 at Mechanicsville United Methodist Church, 184 Lake Ashwood Road, Sumter, with the Rev. Ernest Frierson, pastor, officiating. The funeral procession will leave the home at 1:20 p. m. Burial will take place in the Barnettsville Baptist Church Yard Cemetery, 106 Manville – St. Charles Road, Bishopville.
