Betty J. Miller, 76, departed this life peacefully surrounded by loved ones on Tuesday, December 5, 2023 at Prisma Health Tuomey Hospital, Sumter, South Carolina. Born on October 20, 1947, she was the daughter of the late Denis and Rosa C. Carson Miller. She attended the public schools of Sumter County. She graduated from Lincoln High School with the class of 1965. She held a Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education from Morris College and a Masters of Education Degree from Cambridge College in Boston, Massachusetts. Betty taught in various counties in South Carolina, New Jersey and Maryland. She accepted Christ at an early age and was a dedicated member of Trinity Missionary Baptist Church for many years. She attended service faithfully until her health declined. Betty always had a sweet spirit and was loved by everyone that she touched. She loved helping others, shopping and working in her yard. She enjoyed being a life member of the Lincoln High school Preservation Alumni association, the Morris College Sumter Chapter Alumni Association and a life member of the Morris College National Alumni Association. She leaves to cherish her memories: two loving sisters, Georgia Miller of New Jersey and Ruby Shuler of Orangeburg; a devoted niece, Sharon Helton Massey; one sister-in-law, Marion Miller of Perry, Georgia; longtime best friend, Gail Bryant Allen; a special god daughter / niece, Deandra Miller; other godchildren, Tony Willis, Ashleigh Walker and Carrietta Cook; special great niece, Kimouri Massey; special great nephew, Ja’juan Massey; special great-great nephew, Jaceon “Jace” McKenzie; long time friends, Martha Colclough Chandler, Gloria McKnight Ragin, Phyllis Way and Oliver Francis; nine other nieces; eight other nephews, and a host of other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her loving parents, Denis and Rosa C. Carson Miller; brothers, Roger, Charlie and John Miller; sister, Ruth Miller Helton; brother-in-law, Ben Helton, Jr.; nephew, Shawn Helton and a great-great niece, Onyea Helton. In accordance with the COVID-19 guidelines, the family is requesting that face masks and social distancing be observed by relatives and friends during visitations from 3:00 p. m. – 5:00 p. m. on Sunday, December 10, 2023 at the home of her best friend, Gail Allen, 123 John Street, Sumter. Viewing with Wake service will be held Monday, December 11, 2023 at Trinity Missionary Baptist Church, 155 Wall Street, Sumter from 10:00 a. m. until time of funeral services at 11:00 a. m. with the Rev. Larry C. Weston, Pastor, Eulogist. The Family will leave the home, 24 Phillips Street, Sumter at 9:30 a. m. Burial will be in the Andrew Chapel Baptist Church Cemetery, 559 Big Buck Boulevard, Orangeburg.
