Modistein Rose VanBuren was born on February 27, 1927 in Olanta, South Carolina to the late Stuart Rose and the late Leola Kirby Rose. She departed this earthly life on May 24, 2023 at Sumter East Health and Rehabilitation. At an early age her faith in God started at St. John AME Church of Lynchburg. In 1954, she moved to Sumter. Through the years she joined in fellowship at Brown Chapel Baptist of Sumter and St. Paul AME of Sumter (Plowden Mill Rd). Mrs. VanBuren was united in matrimony to the late Willie VanBuren and this Union was blessed with 16 children. She was preceded in death by six brothers and four sisters, two sons, Lewis and Willie “Bill” VanBuren lll and three daughters, Beverly Irene VanBuren, Willie Mae VanBuren, and Apostle Francis Van Buren Washington; one granddaughter, Chrishonda VanBuren, one grandson, Michael Anderson Jr.; one great grandson, Tyshawn Brockington, and one great-great great grandson, Rakeem McDonald Jr. Those left to cherish her Legacy of Love includes: her children, Katie Hayward of Philadelphia PA, Pauline (Michael) Anderson of Sumter, Larry (Deloris) VanBuren of Tyler, TX, Patricia (Willie) Gregg of Sumter, Maybelline VanBuren of Philadelphia, PA, Hattie McFadden of Sumter, Lori Ann Smith of Charleston, Perry VanBuren of Sumter, Allen VanBuren of Jacksonville, FL, Alfonso VanBuren of Sumter, James Earl Smith of Atlanta, GA, Gary Frierson of New Castle, DE; 9 special grandchildren reared in the home, Vikki Zubally, of Jacksonville, Fl, Tammy (Eugene) Maxfield of Sumter, Robert Myers of Tuscaloosa, AL, Tony Myers of Houston, TX, Vannesia VanBuren of Lexington, LaTanya (Leroy) Dixon of Sumter, Latosha Myers of Pontaic, Felicity Goodley of Summerton, Tawanna (Paul) Canty of Sumter, Blake Washington of Columbia; 31additional grandchildren; 127 great grandchildren; 105 great great grandchildren; 9 great-great-great grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other loving relatives. In accordance with the COVID-19 guidelines, the family is requesting that face masks and social distancing be observed by relatives and friends during visitation at the home, 1610 South Guignard Parkway, Sumter. Funeral Services will be held Wednesday, May 31, 2023 – 2:00 p. m. at Union Station A.M.E. Church, 945 South Main Street, Sumter, with the Rev. Lemuel Washington, Pastor, Eulogist. The Remains will be placed in the church at 1:00 P. M. for viewing until time of services. The procession will leave the home at 1:30 p. m. Burial will be in the Evergreen Memorial Park, 802 North Guignard Drive, Sumter.
