On February 18, 1956 in Clarendon County, Jesse Joe Calhoun was born to the late Mason and Julia Ann Calhoun in Manning. He departed this life on August 16h, 2022 in Sumter. He is preceded in death by one grandson Gerald Alan Dunn, Jr; one granddaughter Lily Anna Guzman; three brothers Joshua Smith, William Calhoun, Mason Calhoun Jr; and one sister Catherine Calhoun Hilton. Jesse Joe Calhoun, affectionately referred to as “Cowboy” received his formal education within the Clarendon County School System. In his youth, Jesse attended Mt. Chapel Baptist Church in Manning. As a young adult, Jesse was joined in holy matrimony to the former Mary Helen Dunkin in 1975. They relocated to New Jersey and subsequently to New York where he worked for many years as a carpenter. From this union, they were blessed with a daughter. Jesse was a people person who never met a stranger. His greatest enjoyment was spending time with family, grilling, watching westerns, and entertaining his friends and relatives. As a senior adult, he attended New Birth COGIC in Sumter, SC with his daughter and grandchildren under the leadership of Reverend Julius C. Ragin. He leaves to cherish his loving memory: three children, Patina Calhoun (Gerald) Dunn, Jesse Joe Calhoun Jr, LaShana Calhoun (Luis) Guzman; three sisters, Vermell Mouzon, Sandra Walker and Gloria Reynolds; one brother Mitchell Calhoun; six grandsons; seven granddaughters; four great granddaughters; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends. In accordance with the COVID 19 guidelines, the family is requesting that face masks and social distancing be observed by relatives and friends during visitation at the home, 270 Geddings Road, Sumter. Funeral services will be held 3:00 p. m., Sunday, August 21, 2022, at New Birth COGIC, 307 West Oakland Avenue, Sumter, with Pastor Julius C. Ragin, officiating. The procession will leave the home at 2:20 p. m.
