James Edward Cabbagestalk, son of the late Paul and Robina Dixon Cabbagestalk was born on August 2, 1950 in Sumter. He departed this life on Sunday, July 10, 2022 at Carriage House of Sumter. James received his formal education in Sumter County Public Schools at Moore Elementary and Lincoln High School. James was baptized at Reid Chapel A. M. E. Church at an early age and as an adult he became a member of Mechanicsville United Methodist Church. James was united in Holy Matrimony to Delores Hodge on November 28, 1970, and to this union one son, Frederick L. Cabbagestalk, aka Minister BL Shabazz was born. James served in the Vietnam War before returning to New Jersey to work for the U. S. Metals Refining Company. He was also employed by Davis Plumbing of Sumter. Those left to cherish James’ memories are: his loving wife, Delores Hodge; his son, Minister BL Shabazz; a step-son, Cederick Humes, all of Sumter; three grandsons, Jacquard Grinnell of McAllen, Texas, Ehrick Cabbagestalk of Columbia, and Jaylin McFadden of Salters; a great-granddaughter, Maliyah M. Grinnell of McAllen, Texas; three sisters, Reverend Roberta C. Josey, Juanita C. (Matt) Joe and Robina C. (Charles) Richardson, all of Sumter; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. James was preceded in death by three brothers, Leroy Cabbagestalk, Larry Cabbagestalk and Paul Cabbagestalk, Jr. and one sister, Eliza Ann Alston. In accordance with the COVID 19 guidelines, the family is requesting that face masks and social distancing be observed by relatives and friends during visitation at the home, 1040 Porter Street, Sumter. Funeral services will be held 1:00 p. m., Thursday, July 14, 2022 at Mechanicsville United Methodist Church, 184 Lake Ashwood Road, Sumter, with the Rev. Kenneth Middleton, Pastor, Eulogist. The procession will leave the home at 12:20 p. m. Burial will follow in the Mechanicsville United Methodist Church Cemetery.
