Martha A. Magazine-Cooley was born in Sumter County, South Carolina, on August 7, 1957 to the late Rebecca Magazine Johnson. Martha, 64, died on October 16, 2021 in her home. Martha was educated in the public schools of Sumter County. After high school, she joined the United States Army in 1977 and served until 1986. During her time in the military, she earned an Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, two M16 Marksman Badges and two Good Conduct Medals. After receiving an honorable discharge from the military, she continued to work with the Army as a civilian for many years. She attended and graduated from Jefferson Community College and Methodist University. Martha was preceded in death by her mother, Rebecca Magazine-Johnson and a brother, Vernon Magazine. She is survived by: a daughter, Tameka Joseph; a son, Gamaliel Alar Magazine-Ward; two sisters, Valerie Magazine, Elicia (Davis) McLeod; two brothers, James Magazine and Marcus (Hope) Johnson; five grandchildren, Tyrique Apple White, Lyric apple White, Zion Joseph, Elijah Joseph and Mekayla Magazine-Ward; one great grandson, Grayson Apple White and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. The family would like to acknowledge the following close friends, Herron and Mary McCollum, Milton Mitchell, Angelique Fleming-Faison, Gloria Johnson and Al Murray. In accordance with the COV19 guidelines, the family is requesting that face masks and social distancing be observed by relatives and friends during visitations at the home, 50 North Milton Road, Sumter. Funeral services will be held Friday, October 22, 2021 – 11:00 a. m. in the John Wesley Williams Sr. Memorial Chapel of Williams Funeral Home, Inc., 821 North Main Street, Sumter, with the Rev. Dr. James E. Williams, Officiating, the Rev. Joseph Ricks, Eulogist. The procession will leave at 10:30 a. m. from the home. Burial will be at 1:00 p. m. in the Florence National Cemetery, 803 East National Cemetery Road, Florence.
