Bishop Joseph Greg Heyward, Sr. entered his eternal rest on August 4, 2021 at the Prisma Health Tuomey Hospital, Sumter, after a brief stay. He was born on November 10, 1942, in Charleston, to the proud parents of the late Florine Pinkney Heyward and Lee Heyward. He was one of six siblings and received his formal education in Charleston. Bishop Joseph Heyward received Christ as his personal Savior at the age of sixteen and began attending Mt. Carmel Pentecostal Faith Church, in Charleston. He became a full-time missionary and joined the Household of Faith serving under the leadership of Bishop Rosa A. Horn. He began to travel and served faithfully in several states including New York City, Maryland, New Jersey, (Bethel Sunshine Camp), North Carolina and other locations. Bishop Heyward was called by God to pastor Bethel Farm Pentecostal Faith Church, Sumter, in 1976. After 20 plus years of employment, Bishop Heyward retired from Prisma Health Tuomey Hospital, Sumter. Bishop Joseph and Sister Joyce Lanier Heyward were joined in Holy Matrimony on October 24, 1970 in New York City. They celebrated 50 years of Martial Bliss. To that faithful union were born five children, Joseph (Marie) Heyward, Rojessica Heyward, Gladene (Adrian) Heyward-Reid, Karl (Angelic) Heyward and Artemus (Monica) Heyward. He enjoyed the opportunity to spend quality time with his grandchildren, Joseph Heyward, III, Christine Heyward, Victoria Reid and Alaina Heyward. He also leaves to cherished, his sister, Maybell Jackson; his brother, William (Helena) Heyward of MD; in--laws, Ethel Gowers, Elder Harry (Janine) Gowers, a host of nieces, nephews, godchildren, other relatives and friends. In accordance with the COVID 19 guidelines, the family is requesting face masks and social distancing be observed by relatives and friends during visitation at the home, 3175 North Main Street, Sumter. Funeral services will be held 2:00 p. m., Saturday, August 14, 2021 at Canty Memorial Church of God In Christ, 873 Woodcrest Street, Sumter, with Senior Pastor, Eugene Canty Sr., Pastor, Elder Harry Gowers, Eulogist. The procession will leave the home at 1:20 p. m. Burial will be in the Whites Cemetery, 1200 Airport Road, Sumter.
