Welcome to Williams Funeral Home

John Edward Capers passed peacefully from this life the afternoon of April 20, 2021 at Prisma Health Tuomey in Sumter. He was surrounded and supported with his loving family by his side. John Edward Capers was born on April 8, 1953 to the late Allen and Epsie Stukes Capers in Pinewood. John was educated in the public schools of Sumter County and was a 1971 graduate of Furman High School in Sumter. He worked as a farmer for over 30+ years, and then was employed at Vaughn Bassett Williams Furniture several years before retiring. Early in his youth he joined Calvary Baptist Church in Pinewood. John was a very quiet and loving soul. He was a hard worker and was very dedicated to his family and friends. He was always willing to lend a helping hand. He spent many hours teaching his oldest nephew how to drive and also helped him acquire his very first job. He was a true sports enthusiast and spent his spare time with family watching his favorite basketball and football teams. In his younger years, John spent much of his leisure time fishing at nearby ponds. Out of all his many blessings, he was most grateful for being blessed with his two children, Jonathan and Janna, whom he loved dearly. “John, take your rest. We love you very much, but God loves you best. You will be missed, but never forgotten.” John leaves to cherish his precious memories: one son, Jonathan Grinnell of Sumter; one daughter, Janna Grinnell of Sumter; two sisters, Anna Dudley of Decatur, Georgia and Betty Capers of Sumter; two brothers, Willie (Rosa) Capers of Pinewood and James Capers of Sumter; one brother-in-law, Harry Lee Spann of Sumter. He also leaves to cherish his memories; Jerry Grinnell, a young man that he cherished as his own son; a special friend, Denise Grinnell; and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends. In accordance with the COVID-19 guidelines, the family is requesting face masks and social distancing be observed by relatives and friends during all visitation at the home, 127 Jackson Street, Sumter. Graveside services will be held 2:00 p. m., Tuesday, April 27, 2021 at Calvary Missionary Baptist Church, 10075 Calvary Church Road, Pinewood, with the Rev. E. L. Sanders, pastor, presiding. Burial will be in the Calvary-Zion Hill Churchyard Cemetery. The procession will leave the home at 1:20 p. m.
