Eliza Ann Cabbagestalk Alston, 79, entered into eternal rest on Monday, November 4, 2019 at her home in Sumter. Born on April 9, 1940, in Lee County, she was the second of seven children of the late Paul and Robina Dixon Cabbagestalk. She attended the public schools of Sumter County and was a member of Mt. Olive A. M. E. Church prior to moving to Elizabeth, N. J. After moving to New Jersey, Ann was reunited with the love of her life, the late Marion Alston. To this union two children were born. Ann was a dedicated member of Little Rock Holiness Church, serving in various ministries. She was employed for many years with Super Market Services prior to gaining employment with Woodbridge Developmental Services as a caregiver for adults with special needs. Upon retirement from Woodbridge, she and her family returned to South Carolina. Ann joined Mechanicsville United Methodist Church, where she served faithfully as a member of the United Methodist Women and Older Adult Ministry. Ann was crowned “Mrs. Mechanicsville” in 2015. Ann also was actively involved in various community organizations, including: Walnut Hill Community Club, Senior Citizens Club and the Ever Ready Club. She will be greatly missed by: her two children, Matthew (Verona) Cabbagestalk and Loretta (James) Wilson, both of Sumter; one adopted daughter, Donna Norwood; three grandchildren; three sisters, Juanita (Roosevelt) Joe, Rev. Roberta (Manning, deceased) Josey, Robina (Charles) Richardson; one brother, James Edward (Delores) Cabbaagestalk, all of Sumter; one uncle, Rev. Abraham (Carolyn) Dixon of Roselle, N J; three aunts, Rev. Rosa (Alphonso) Copes of Linden, NJ, Geneva Wilson of Bishopville, Margaret Wilson of Roselle, NJ; her caregiver, Emma English; a host of nieces, nephews, in-laws, other relatives and friends. The family is receiving relatives and friends at the home 1022 Dibert Street, Sumter. Funeral Services will be held 11 a. m., Monday, November 11, 2019 from the Mechanicsville United Methodist Church, 184 Lakewood Road, Sumter with the Reverend Ernest W. Frierson, pastor, eulogist. The Remains will be placed in the church at 10 a. m. The funeral procession will leave the home at 10:20 a. m. Interment will follow in the Mechanicsville United Methodist Church Cemetery.
