Joyce Denise Funchess Mickens died Saturday, January 4, 2020 at Prisma Health Tuomey Hospital, Sumter. Born April 5, 1956, in Fort Peirce, Florida, she was the daughter of Willie Mae Funchess Waklatsi. She was reared by her grandparents, the late Willie and Hattie White Funchess. She attended Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church. Joyce was educated in the public schools of Sumter County and a graduate of Sumter High School, Class of 1973. She made her career as a cook, working at several local businesses and restaurants including; Prisma Health Tuomey Hospital and the Sidewalk Café. She is survived by: her mother, Willie Mae Funchess Waklatsi; her children, Tamikka (Tony) James, Jamie (Ramon, Sr.) Newkirk, Stevetta McGill and Jacody Brown, all of Sumter; sisters, Sheila Fullwood of Philadelphia, PA, Stephanie Fullwood of Sumter; seven grandchildren; one great-grand child; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. The family is receiving relatives and friends at the home, 907 South Main Street, Sumter. Funeral services will be held 1 p. m., Saturday, January 11, 2020 in the John Wesley Williams Sr. Memorial Chapel, Williams Funeral Home, Inc., 821 North Main Street, Sumter, with Pastor Debbie Bowens-Davis, officiating, eulogist. Funeral Procession will leave from the home at 12:20 p. m.
