Deacon Samuel “Sammie” Curtis, 66, husband of Jean Sanders Curtis, departed this life on Tuesday, August 19, 2014 at Tuomey Regional Medical Center, Sumter. Born July 27, 1948, in Sumter County, he was the son of the late Isaac Clea and Abbie Curtis Dawson. He was educated in the public schools of Sumter County, and a graduate of Hillcrest High School, Class of 1967.
He was a faithful and devoted member of Hopewell Missionary Baptist Church, where he served as a Deacon and Superintendent of the Sunday School, past trustee, usher, and member of the L. W. Walker Choir. He also served actively in the Wateree Baptist Association. He was employed at TJ Maxx and retired from Kmart after 25 years. He enjoyed fishing, watching sports, playing cards, talking and laughing.
He leaves to cherish his memories: a loving wife, Jean Sanders Curtis of Sumter, SC; four children, Sammie Prioleau, Leon Prioleau, Gabrielle Curtis and Kimberly Curtis, all from Sumter, SC; two granddaughters, Aniyah Adams and Mariah Prioleau-Johnson of Sumter, SC; four brothers, Ezekial Curtis of Hyattsville, MD, Foster Curtis (Nancy) of New Haven, CT, Hewitt Curtis (Grace) of Macon, GA, Isaac Clea, Jr. of Baltimore, MD; two sisters, Ellarine Dawson and Olivia Morant (Daniel) both of Dalzell, SC; other cousins, Sara Draughn (Jessie) of Rocky Mount, NC, Patricia Simmons of Aiken, SC, Cornelia Curtis of Sumter, SC; sisters-in-law, Betty Scott of Philadelphia, PA, Linda Newton (Atwood) of District Heights, MD, Belva Cork (Larry) of Bowie, MD, Rosa Martin (Elder Larenzo) of Sumter, SC; brothers-in-law, Willie Sanders (Jennifer) of Hopkins, SC, and John Sanders of Norcross, GA; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Preceding him in death was his brother, Myles Dawson, Jr. and his sister, Helen Mehta.
Funeral services will be held 3:00 p. m., Saturday, August 23, 2014 from the Hopewell Baptist Church, 3285 Peach Orchard Road, Dalzell, SC, with the Rev. Richard Addison, pastor, eulogist, assisted by the Rev. Charlie Howard, Rev. E. L. Sanders, Rev. Lewis Walker, Jr., and Elder Larenzo Martin.
The family will be receiving friends and relatives at the home, 112 Crescent Avenue, Sumter, SC.
The Remains will be placed in the church at 2:00 p. m.
The procession will leave from the home at 2:20 p. m.
Flower bearers will be nieces and Hillcrest High School, Class of 1967.
Pall bearers will be nephews and Hillcrest High School, Class of 1967.
Burial will be in the Hopewell Baptist Church Yard Cemetery.
