Henry Judson Peterson, 85, a man full of wisdom and love, was called to his eternal rest on Sunday, December 9, 2012 at his home. Born in Dillon County on July 16, 1927, he was the youngest of five children of the late Walter Peterson and Annie James Peterson.
Henry was educated in the public schools of Dillon County. Later, he moved from Dillon to New York City, NY, where he gained employment as a railroad car porter then worked his way up to a train conductor. Retiring from the New York City Transit Authority after many years of service, Henry enrolled in the truck driver’s institute, where he received his CDL license. He found employment in the trucking industry working for a private company, where he entered into the Teamster Union. While being in the Union he received many certificates and letters of recognition for all of his years of dedicated work and service. In 1989, he retired from working.
While living in New York City, Henry met a beautiful woman, the love of his life, the late Pearl Wells Peterson whom he married and God blessed them with four sons. Henry was a family man who was always willing to help others. Everyone he came in contact with left his presence with a smile and some wisdom. If he was upset or in pain he never showed it, instead he comforted the other person.
Henry enjoyed Jazz and R & B music as well as watching western shows and other favorite television channels.
After living in New York for many years the couple relocated to Sumter, where they both lived a happy loving life. Henry joined Unionville AME Church, where he was an active member and received the “Father of The Year Award”.
He leaves to cherish his precious memories: his children, Calvin (Judy) Wells, Dennis (Mattie) Wells, Steven Wells, Gregory Robinson and Walter Robinson; two step children, Joan and Samuel Robinson; nine grandchildren, Chanel, Niema, and Christopher Wells, Shadaya, Juan, Gregory, Jr., Kadijah, Corey, and Kimberly Robinson, all of NY; one sister, Lucille Peterson of Dillon; five sisters-in-law, Neddie (Clarlise) Lesane, Frances Dean, Sue Mae Wells, all of Sumter, Ida Wilson and Julia (William) Brown of Baltimore, MD; one brother-in-law, Elias (Mildred) Wells of Mayesville; a special nephew, Walter Lee Hughes, and two special nieces, Ruth White and Renee Dean, all of Sumter; a host of other nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
