Martha Morant Lighty, 68, departed this earthly life on Friday, November 23, 2012 at Tuomey Health Care System, Sumter. Born in Lee County on July 19, 1944, she was the daughter of the late Willie Morant and Gertrude Oliver Morant.
“Betty”, as she was affectionately called, received her education in the Lee County Public Schools System where she attended Dennis High School. Later, she moved to Harlem, N. Y., where she resided for 39 years. While living in New York, she was employed with the City of New York, Human Resources Administration for 35 years prior to her retirement. After retiring, she relocated back to her childhood home in South Carolina to care for her ailing mother. She rejoined Mt. Olive A. M. E. Church, Woodrow, where she attended as a faithful member. Martha loved crossword puzzles, reading, traveling and caring for others.
She leaves to cherish her precious memories: one daughter, Veronica Morant (Clifford); one son, John Earl Morant (Grace); two granddaughters, Samantha Morant and Courtney Parker, all of Harlem N. Y.; two grandsons, John Morant of Virginia, and Clifford Pollard, Jr. of Harlem, N. Y.; one great-grandson, Qincy Jean of Queens, N. Y.; five sisters, Lillie (James) Williams, Edith Durant, Naomi Cooke, Janie Dingle and Ann Gallishaw; four brothers, Willie Morant (Jenny), James (Flossie) Morant, Roy (Frances) Morant and Kenny Green; one aunt, Rosa Lee Allbritton of New York; one uncle, John (Mary) Morant of Wedgefield; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Isaac Morant and sister, Gertrude Moses.
Funeral services will be held 1:00 p. m., Wednesday, November 28, 2012 from the Mt. Olive A. M. E. Church, 2738 Woodrow Road, Woodrow, with the Rev. Dr. Friendly J. Gadson, pastor, eulogist, the Rev. Henry J. Murray, presiding, assisted by the Rev. Janie Dingle, Rev. Rosa Allbritton and Evangelist Virginia Brunson.
The family will receive friends at her home 2716 Rembert Church Road, Dalzell.
The Remains will be placed in the church at 12:00 noon.
The procession will leave from her home at 12:30 p. m.
Floral bearers will be members of the Mt. Olive Women Missionary Society and Sunday School Class # 1.
Pall bearers will be nephews.
Burial will be in the Mt. Olive Memorial Garden, Sumter.
