George McKnight

George Thomas McKnight, 71, of 3718 Cairn Brook Drive, Columbia,  departed this life on Tuesday, July 17, 2012 at Lexington Medical Center, West Columbia.  Born in Sumter County on January 26, 1941, he was the son of the late Johnson McKnight, Sr. and Willie Mea Gilyard McKnight.

He was a graduate of Mt. Pleasant High School, Elliott,  Class of 1963.  He retired from the Department of Corrections, Columbia.

He leaves to cherish his memory: his wife of 45 years, Ruth Woods McKnight; his loving and devoted children, Dwayne (Tammy) McKnight and Georgeana (Samuel) Johnson both of Columbia, Darrell McKnight of the home;  three stepchildren, Roy Lee Woods of the home, COL  Loretta (Micheal) Deaner of Virginia, Ramona Woods of Lynchburg;  two sisters,  a special sister, Thelma Hodge of Mayesville, Alice (Covell) Woods of Bishopville;   one brother, Charlie McKnight of St. Charles; special niece, Rhunette (Alexander) Woods of Sumter;  a special friend, Justin Thompson of Columbia;  six grandchildren, Garrett McKnight, Samuel Johnson III, Samantha Johnson, Dwayne McKnight, Jr. and Makila McKnight;  eight step grandchildren;  a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives,  and friends.

He was preceded in death by four brothers, James, Irvin, Johnson, Jr., and Calvin McKnight and two sisters, Rutha Mea Rowell and Carolyn McKnight Woods.

Funeral services will be held 1:00 p. m., Saturday, July 21, 2012 from the John Wesley Williams, Sr. Memorial Chapel, Williams Funeral Home, Inc.  821 North Main Street,  Sumter, with Minister Terry Pope, officiating, eulogist,  assisted by Minister Alvin Sims,  and Minister Justin Thompson.

The family will receive friends at the home of Georgeana Johnson,  318 Challeon Court, Columbia and Runnette Woods,  1045 Manning Road, Sumter.

The funeral procession will leave 12:20 p. m. from the home of  Ramona Woods  2385 Highway 76 West, Lynchburg

Floral bearers and Pall bearers will be family and friends.
