Herbert Smith Vaughn

Herbert Smith Vaughn, 82, husband of Ethel McDonald Vaughn, peacefully entered into eternal rest on  Thursday, March 24, 2011, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center, Sumter.  Born January 15, 1929 in Sumter County, he was the son of the late Henry Vaughn and Janie McLeod Gordon Vaughn.

He grew up in the Oswego Community of Sumter County.  At an early age, he accepted Christ and lived a Christian life.  He joined and was a devoted member of Clark United Methodist Church, where he was a Lay Leader, Lay Speaker, member of the Board of Trustees, Young Adult Choir and later the Senior Choir and also the Finance Committee.  He remained a  faithful and loyal member of the church until his health failed.

He leaves to cherish his precious memories;  his wife, Ethel McDonald Vaughn;  his children, Catherine Belser and  Robin Vaughn of Sumter,  Shirley (Thomas) Rush of Anchorage, AK,  Harold (Nancy) Vaughn of Oxon Hill, MD,  Linda (Robert) Morgan of Largo, MD,  Donna (Hawthorne) Cave of Mt. Rainer, MD,  Roy (Ruth) Vaughn of Los Angeles, CA;  ten grandchildren, Rodney, Mellodee, Renard, Holland, Heath,  Shariah, Fanta, Kaneya, Jamal and Jasmine;  seven great-grandchildren; seven sisters-in-law, Willie L. Vaughn, Louise Vaughn, Lilly Mae Tiller, Betty Hardy, Fannie McDonald, Rose Ann McDonald and Rosa Carter; three brothers-in-law, Eugene McDonald,  James McDonald and Herman Hardy;   a host of  nieces, nephews,  cousins and friends.

He was preceded in death by six brothers, Thomas Carter, Jr.,  Willie Vaughn,  Henry Vaughn Gaile, John Vaughn, William Vaughn and James Vaughn, and two sisters, Francis Lucky and Marie Pugh.

Funeral  services will be  held 2:00 p. m.,  Wednesday,  March 30, 2011  from  the   Clark United Methodist Church,  2980 Highway 401, Sumter    with  the Rev. Bobby Shaw, Pastor, presiding,  the Rev. Robert Morgan, eulogist, assisted by the Rev. Darryl Washington, Rev. Dr. Friendly J. Gadson and Rev. Eddie Thomas..

The family will receive friends at the home 2 Eaton Boulevard, Sumter.

The Remains will be placed in the church at 1:00 p. m.

The funeral procession will leave from the home at 1:00 p. m.

Floral bearers will be friends of the family.

Pall bearers will be Renard Belser, Jamal Cave, Rodney Rush, Marion Vaughn, John Vaughn and James Vaughn.

Interment will be in the Clark United Methodist Church Yard Cemetery, Sumter.
