James Elijah “Son” Nelson, 73, earthly life ended on Thursday, October 21, 2010 at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center, Hartsville. Born August 27, 1937 in Sumter County, he was the son of the late Josh Nelson, Sr. and Ophelia Bozier Nelson.
He attended the public schools of Sumter County. At an early age he joined Enon Missionary Baptist Church, where he was an active member until his health failed. He was employed with the City of Sumter Water Department for many years. Later, he relocated to Philadelphia, PA, where he worked as a Custodian at West Park Hospital and Central Carolina Community College.
He leaves to cherish his memories: his children, Darryl Rouse of Norristown, PA, James Anthony Nelson of Newark, N. J., Stefan Jacob Nelson, Yolanda D. Nelson, Shawn Ronea and Richard Nelson, all of New York; two step children, Darlene Kelley and Samuel Gamble, both of Sumter; five sisters, Alberta N. Capers and Janie Mae (David) McDaniel, both of Sumter, Betsy E. (Thomas) Rufus, Minnie R. (Eddie) Lesane, and Reita L. (Barkley) McGill, all of Lynchburg; two brothers, Deacon Josh Nelson, Jr. of Philadelphia, PA and Willie Nelson, Sr. of Sumter; five aunts, Caroline Boyd of Charlotte, N. C., Eva (Major) Nelson and Ruth (George) David, both of Staten Island, N. Y., Edith (Isaiah) Collington of Latta, Classie (Clarence) Coleman of Lakewood, N. J.; two uncles, Harold (Mildred) Nelson of Latta, Legette (Betty) Nelson of Upper State, N. Y.; one sister-in-law, Dorothy Nelson of Sumter; twenty three grandchildren; three great grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
He was preceded in death by one granddaughter, Darvel Rouse; one step son, Willie Earl Gamble; five sisters, Janie L. McFadden, Ophelia, Beulah, Martha and Mary Nelson; two brothers, Leroy and Jerome Nelson; three uncles; and two aunts.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 P. M., Wednesday, October 27, 2010 from the Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church, 14 Brand Street, Sumter with the Rev. Larry W. Barnes, pastor, eulogist.
The family will receive friends at the home of his brother, Willie Nelson 2660 Lowder Road, Sumter.
The Remains will be placed in the church for viewing at 1:00 p. m.
The funeral procession will leave from the home of his brother at 1:20 p. m.
Floral Bearers will be nieces.
Pall Bearers will be nephews.
Interment will be in the Cain’s Cemetery, Sumter.
