Henry Oaks, Sr., 67, husband of Carrie Lewis Oaks, departed this earthly life on Monday, October 11, 2010 at Tuomey Regional Medical Center, Sumter. Born in Sumter County on May 18, 1943, he was the son of the late Alphonzo Oaks and Beatrice Scriven Oaks.
Henry attended the public schools of Sumter County. He worked several jobs building many bridges. His most recent job was with United Contractor as a supervisor from which he retired in 2008. Henry was a member of the Golden Saddle and Wolf Pack Horse Club.
He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend. Henry loved his animals, especially his horses and his dog “Buddy”.
He leaves to cherish his precious memories: a devoted and loving wife, Carrie Lewis Oaks; ten beloved children, Quincy (Michelle) Pringle of Winnsboro, Barbara (Willie) Williams of Sumter, Henry Oaks, Jr. of Newark, N. J., Debbie Murphy of Dalzell, Gary (Takeya) Oaks of Augusta, GA, Curtis (Barbara) Spann of Rembert, Connie Oaks of Killeen, TX, Damond Lewis of Sumter, Johnny Lewis of Clearwater, FLA, and Teresa Lewis of Sagano, MI; two adopted children, Kiara and TyQuan Lewis of the home; six brothers, Alphonzo (Ruby) Oaks of Irvington, N. J., Fredrick Oaks of Dalzell, Legrant Oaks of Bishopville, Robert Oaks of Dalzell, Calvin Oaks and Cedric (Lucille) Oaks, both of Sumter; four sisters, Maggie John of Staten Island, N. Y., Edna Mae Oaks and Beatrice Oaks, both of Newark, N. J., Carolyn Jefferson of Sumter; his mother-in-law, Lois B. Lewis; several other sisters and brothes-in-law; thirty two grandchildren; eleven great grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Eloise Graves; a brother, Oscar Oaks; a son-in-law, Stanley Murphy; a brother-in-law, Alfred John; and a sister-in-law, Janette Spann.
Funeral services will be held 1:00 P. M., Friday, October 15, 2010 from the Ebenezer Presbyterian Church USA, 4620 Queen Chapel Road, Dalzell with the Rev. Calvin B. Washington, pastor of New Haven and Springhill United Methodist Churches, eulogist, Reverend Retha Nelson, Moderator of presiding, assisted by Minister Rickey Stuckey, Sr.
The family will receive friends at the home 4354 Queen Chapel Road, Sumter.
The Remains will be placed in the church for viewing at noon until time of the service.
The funeral procession will leave from the home at 12:30 p. m.
Floral bearers will be family and friends.
Pall bearers will be brothers and nephews.
Interment will be in the Ebenezer Presbyterian Church Yard Cemetery.
