Betty Rosa Lee Simon Canty

Betty Rosa Lee Simon Canty, 52,  wife of Kevin Canty,  entered eternal rest  on  Saturday,  September 11, 2010   at Tuomey Regional Medical Center, Sumter.
Born  in Sumter County on February 2, 1958   she was a daughter of the late Freddie Lee “Buster” and Elder Louise Myers Simon.

Betty, affectionately known as “DoBe”, attended the public schools of Sumter County and was a 1976 graduate of Maywood High School. She continued her education by attending Central Carolina where she received many certificated in operations of heavy equipment and shipping and receiving.  Betty worked for many years at Rainair, Bosch and later Northwood Assisted Living until she departed this life.

 Betty accepted Christ as her personal Savior early in life.  She was a member of St. James Holiness Church, The Love Center Non-Denominational Church and later joined Mt. Pisgah A. M. E. Church, where she served faithfully until her passing.

She leaves to cherish her precious memories:  her husband,  Kevin Canty of Sumter;  one daughter, Fredricka Simon;  two grandchildren, Candance Renee Simon and Romell Marshall Witherspoon, Jr.;  two sisters, Minister Gloria Simon (Elder Harel) Benjamin and Lucille Burgess Robinson;  eight nieces, Zelda, Tarnesha and Cynthia Benjamin of Columbia, Melissa (Arthur) Mitchell, Jr., Vicky, Lutrina and Jackie Robinson of Sumter, and Jennifer Benjamin of Charleston; three adopted daughters, Francis McCray, Felicia Walters and Feresa McCloud of Sumter;  two uncles, Elder Jacob Myers, Sr. and Walter Simon of Sumter;  three aunts, Elizabeth Bessie Johnson and Dorothy Myers of Sumter,  Mazie Illery of Baltimore, MD; a life long friend, DeDe;  three brothers-in-law, Michael Canty of Sumter, Darryl and Vernon Canty of Kentucky;  a host of grandnieces, grandnephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her former husband, Frank Tindal, and an adopted son, Frank Tindal, Jr.

Funeral  services  will  be  held 2:00 P. M.,   Thursday,  September 16, 2010  from   the  Mt. Pisgah A. M. E. Church,  217 West Barlette Street,  Sumter,  with Reverend Dr. Betty Clark,  pastor,  eulogist.


The family will receive friends at the  home of her sister and brother-in-law, Elder Harel and Minister Gloria Benjamin,  3045 Homestead Road, Sumter.

A wake service will be held 5:00 – 7:00 P. M., Wednesday, September 15, 2010 in the John Wesley Williams, Sr. Memorial Chapel, Williams Funeral Home, Inc.  821 North Main Street, Sumter.

The Remains will be placed in the church at 1:00 P. M.

The  funeral  cortege  will leave  from  the  home of her sister and brother-in-law at 1:30 P. M.

Floral Bearers  and Pall Bearers will be Class of 1976, Maywood High School.

Burial will be in the St. James Holiness Church Yard Cemetery, Sumter.
