Samuel “Sam” Johnson, 89, widower of Georgia Phillips Johnson, took his heavenly flight on Sunday, April 15, 2018, at Sumter Health and Rehabilitation Facility, Sumter. Born April 7, 1929, in Sumter County, he was the son of the late Jessie and Essie Mae Walker Johnson. He attended the public schools of Lee County. Prior to marriage, Sam served his country in the Korean War as a member of the United States Army. On June 30, 1956, he married Georgie Phillips. They settled and raised their family in Philadelphia, PA before returning to Dalzell. Prior to his illness, Sam was an active member of Joshua Baptist Church, Dalzell, Sam is survived by one son, Marvin Johnson (Lawanda) of Charlotte, NC; his daughters, Sonia Carter (Quincy) of Knoxville, TN, Veda Byrd (Reginald) of Chesapeake, VA; a sister, Louise Cook of Philadelphia, PA; eleven grandchildren; brothers-in-law; sisters-n-law; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 21, 2018, 11 a. m, from the John Wesley Williams Sr. Memorial Chapel of Williams Funeral Home, Inc., 821 North Main Street, Sumter, with the Rev. Roosevelt Williams, officiating, eulogist. A Wake service will be held Friday, April 20, 2018, 6 – 7 p. m. in the John Wesley Williams Sr. Memorial Chapel of Williams Funeral Home, Inc., 821 North Main Street, Sumter. Burial will be in the Joshua Baptist Church Yard Cemetery, 5200 Live Oak Road, Dalzell.
