Bessie M Myers
Jan 28, 1928 to Feb 07, 2018

Bessie Mae Myers, 90, transitioned to her heavenly home on Wednesday, February 7, 2018. Born January 28, 1928, in St. Charles, she was the daughter of the late Arthur and Alberta Moore and the widow of Thomas Myers. “Aunt Boy” or “Aunt Bessie”, as she was affectionately called, spent some of her younger years in Baltimore, MD. She later moved back South to Sumter, where she attended the public schools of Sumter County. This is where she met her husband of more than 50 years and reared their only child, Lillie “Lil” Myers. Mrs. Myers was a faithful and longtime member of Bethel A. M. E. Church, where she was an exceptional leader and ministered in various ways. Bessie was a member of the Pastor’s Aide Committee, Helping Hand Club, President of the Prayer Band, Women Missionary Society, Trustee Board, Usher Board, Sunday School Teacher, sang on the Gospel Choir, worked on the Kitchen Committee, Den Mother of the Flowers Committee and for some time responsible for the lighting of the church. She often visited, fed and prayed with those that were sick and could not make it out to church. She was very instrumental in coordinating and chairing several programs / worship services held at the church. Through her actions, many were led to Christ. An employee of Sumter County Schools, District #17, for over 20 years, she had a true love for Sumter High School’s Football Team. The team could always count on Mrs. Myers to feed them prior to their Friday night football games and to dedicate her time to work the concessions stand during home games. Her true passion was cooking. She was known as the “Cinnamon Roll Lady” by many. She also enjoyed singing, traveling and serving the community as she and Thomas would go from home to home delivering home cooked meals and fresh vegetables grown from their garden. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Myers; grandson, Corey Maple; only sibling, a sister, Willie Mae Rogers, and two close friends, Susie Kenley and Dora Sinkler. She leaves to cherish her memories: a daughter, Lillie M. McGee of Sumter; four grandchildren; thirteen great grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; two special friends, Maggie Ragin and Sarah Dwyer; caretakers, Tonya Gregg and Flossie Edwards; two special nieces, Adrena Myers Moses and Daisy Mae Brunson; special nephew, Joe Louis Myers; special cousin, Patricia Smith of TN; a host of other nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends. Family is receiving relatives and friends at the home, 511 Pitts Road, Sumter. Funeral services will be held Saturday, February 17, 2018, Noon, from the Bethel A. M. E., 219 East Calhoun Street, Sumter, with the Rev. Davie Brown, pastor, eulogist. The Remains will be placed in the church at 11a. m. The procession will leave the home at 11:20 a. m. Burial will be in the Mt. Sinai Presbyterian Church Cemetery, 97 Mt. Sinai Church Road, St. Charles.
