Hosea McQuilla, Jr., 76, departed this earthly life on Monday, January 22, 2018 at Palmetto Health Tuomey Hospital, Sumter after a brief illness. Born October 4, 1941, in Clarendon County, he was the son of the late Hosea and Janie Green McQuilla. He attended his family church, Chapel A. M. E., Paxville, from childhood. Hosea received his formal education in the public schools of Sumter and Clarendon Counties. He began his working career as a truck driver but eventually returned to farming which was in his blood. He leaves a loving family, including a daughter, Gwendolyn McQuilla DuBose (William) of Moncks Corner; sons, James Matthew McQuilla (Avril) of Blythewood and Hosea Emanuel McQuilla (Magdalena) of Santa Rosa, CA; one brother, Joshua McQuilla, two sisters, Janie Harris (Larry) and Julia Gregg (Richard), all of Sumter; special friend, Bertha Briggs and her family; ten grandchildren; one great grandchild; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 27, 2018 at 10 a. m. from the John Wesley Williams Sr. Memorial Chapel, Williams Funeral Home, Inc., 821 North Main Street, Sumter, with Pastor Troy Moore, presiding, and the Rev. James C. Lane, eulogist. Viewing will be Friday from 2 p. m. to 7 p. m. in the John Wesley Williams Sr. Memorial Chapel of Williams Funeral Home, Inc., 821 North Main Street, Sumter, with the family greeting visitors from 5 p. m. to 7 p. m. Burial will be in the Mayesville City Cemetery, Mayesville.
