Thomas Archie Rufus, 77, departed this earthly life on Friday, December 15, 2017 at the residence in Sumter. Born August 8, 1940, in Sumter County, he was the son of the late Archie “Bo” Rufus and Rebecca Cousar Rufus. He attended the public schools of Sumter County. At an early age he joined Asbury United Methodist Church. “PA”, as he was lovingly known, was a remarkable man, quiet with an humble heart, worked at Santee Print and later continued his work with Central Carolina Technical College, where he retired. Thomas is survived by: his wife, Betsy E. Nelson Rufus of the home; seven sons, Thomas Archie (Lula) Rufus, Jr. of Charlotte, NC, Terry (Jacquelyn) Rufus of Sumter, Jeffery (Dawn) Rufus of Charlotte, NC, Barry Rufus of Kentucky, Edward McGhee of Sumter, Dale (Shavonia) McGhee of Tennessee, Robert Rose of Lynchburg; one daughter, Macila (Leroy) James of Columbia; one brother, Charles Rufus of Shiloh; one sister, Jesse Jefferson of Shiloh; one uncle, Vernal (Ada) Cousar of Lynchburg; four aunts, Flossie Cousar, Eliza Bethea and Sallie (Leon) Taylor of New Jersey, Willie Mae Quattlebaum of New York; one son-in-law; two brothers-in-law; three sisters-in-law; twenty two grandchildren; twelve great grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. The family is receiving relatives and friends at the home, 2720 Lowder Road, Sumter. Funeral services will be held Friday, December 22, 2017, 1 p. m. from the Asbury United Methodist Church, 355 Pudding Swamp Road, Lynchburg, with the Rev. Shirley A. McKnight, pastor, eulogist. The Remains will be placed in the church at noon. The funeral procession will leave from the home at 12:20 p. m. Burial will be in the Goodman Cemetery, Lynchburg.
