James David Burgess, 74, passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 10, 2017 at Palmetto Health Tuomey Hospital, Sumter. Born in Mayesville, November 1, 1943, he was the son of the late John Burgess, Sr. and Anna Dinkins Burgess. He received his early education in the public schools Sumter County and graduated from Ebenezer High School, Class of 1964. After graduation, he relocated to Washington, D C. James met and married Barbara Mallory Burgess and from this union one son was born. James was a handyman. He loved working on anything that needed repairs but his true profession was a mechanic. His true calling came when he received a call to be a mechanic to repair small machines at Gallaudet University for the Deft. James retired after 27 years of service at Gallaudet due to illness, but he still enjoyed many years helping other after retirement. He received many award and accolades for his dedicated service. He leaves to cherish his memories: one son, David M. Burgess of Laurinburg, NC; four sisters, Inez Kennedy of Dalzell, Annie Cunningham (Willie) of Lugoff, Bessie Burgess of Sumter and Clara Baker (Moses) of Indian Head, MD; one uncle; two aunts; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. The family is receiving relatives and friends at the home of his sister, Bessie Burgess, 348 Bagnal Drive, Sumter. Funeral services will be held Saturday, December 16, 2017 at 11 a. m. from the John Wesley Williams Sr. Memorial Chapel, Williams Funeral Home, Inc., 821 North Main Street, Sumter, with Pastor Marie Sanders, Anointed Word Christian Worship Center, officiating, eulogist. The funeral procession will leave the home of his sister at 10:30 a. m. Burial will be in the Greater Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church Cemetery.
