Ruth Louise Green Blackwell, 62, departed this life after a brief illness on Wednesday, September 27, 2017, at McLeod Hospice House, Florence. Born May 6, 1955, in Sumter County, she was the 6th child of Mary L. Green and the late David Green. Ruth was educated in the Sumter Public School System. After graduation from Sumter High School, she went on to pursue and received a Bachelor of Science degree in Education from Allen University, Columbia. After college, Ruth relocated to Richmond, Virginia for a number of years and then she moved to the Washington, DC area. One of Ruth’s proudest moments was while employed as a nurse at Howard University Hospital in Washington, DC, she received “Employee of the Year” reward. She lived in the Washington, DC area until 2015 when she returned to Sumter to care for her mother. Precious memories will be cherished by: her mother, Mary L. Green; three daughters, Erika, Audrey and Taneika Blackwell; one step-son, Alphonso Rufus; six brothers, William A., Ernie E. (Gwenda), Harry L., Willie J., Lucious M. (Jim), and John E. (Theresa) Green; one sister, Dianetta Green; five grandchildren; aunts, uncles, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Memorial services will be held Saturday, October 7, 2017 at 12 noon from the Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church, 803 South Harvin Street, Sumter, with the Rev. Marion H. Newton, senior pastor, eulogist. The family is receiving relatives and friends at the home of her brother, Harry Green, 207 Dingle Street, Sumter. The Remains will be placed in the church at 11 a. m. The procession will leave from the home at 11:30 a. m. Private Interment will be held at a later date.
