Stephanie Willis, 53, departed this earthly life on Friday, July 14, 2017, at her home after an extended illness. Born May 11, 1964, in Manhattan, NY, she was the daughter of Susie Jackson Willis and the late TSgt (Ret) Stephen Willis. She attended various Department of Defense and civilian schools around the world and graduated from Sumter High School, Class of 1982. After graduating from high school, Stephanie, also known as “Step” by her family and close friends, enrolled at the University of South Carolina, Columbia, and graduated in 1986 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology. She then embarked upon a career with the South Carolina Department of Corrections (SCDC) that spanned approximately 30 years. During her tenure with SCDC, she successfully rose through the ranks beginning as a Correctional Officer at the Women’s Center in Columbia. Secondly she advanced to Case Worker at Leath Corrections for Women in Greenwood. Further advancement led to her position of Classification Case Manager at Manning Correctional Institution. Stephanie’s final title at the Department was Assistant Division Director of the Classification and Inmate Records Division. In addition, her professional affiliations included membership in the South Carolina Correctional Association, American Correctional Association, South Carolina Employees Association and the Correctional Peace Officers Association (CPOF). Stephanie’s faithful dedication as a diligent employee of the South Carolina Department of Corrections allowed her the opportunity to touch many lives in a positive way. As well, she worked tirelessly in her home church, St. Mark (4-B) Missionary Baptist Church, serving in various capacities. She was a devoted member of the St. Mark Mass Choir until her health began to fail. Stephanie leaves to cherish her memories: her mother, Susie Jackson Willis of Sumter; sister, Dr. Belinda Willis of Columbia; a niece, Ashland Jenkins of Columbia; a special sister, La’Tasha (Walter) Robertson of Sumter; uncles, Dr. Emanuel (Janice) Willis and Sydney Jackson, both of Sumter, Billy of Philadelphia, PA; aunts, Olivia Willis of Green Cove Springs, FLA, Thomasina Tomlin, Geraldine Butler, Marlene, and Verlena Jackson, all of Sumter; god brother, Walter Jenkins, Jr.; god sisters, Brittany Jenkins, Shi-Lynn Kirkland; favorite cousins, Celeste Butler, Linda Leneau, Duane Tomlin, Terran Dupree, Taylor; several god children, and a host of other relatives and friend. Celebration of Life Services will be held Thursday, July 20, 2017, 11 a. m. from the St. Mark – 4 B Missionary Baptist Church, 2280 Four Bridges Road, Sumter, with the Rev. Sammie Simmons, pastor, eulogist. The family is receiving relatives and friends at the home, 913 Clay Street, Sumter. The Remains will be placed in the church at 10 a. m. The procession will leave 10:20 a. m. from the home. Burial will be in the Hillside Memorial Park, 3001 Cain’s Mill Road, Sumter. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, please make contributions to the National Foundation for Cancer Research (NFCR) in her memory.
