The Lord called to rest, Eugene Fortune, 64, in the comfort of his home on Wednesday, June 14, 2017. Born May 29, 1953, in Bishopville (Lee County), he was the son of Lillie Mae Fortune Myers and the late Sammie Lee Coleman. He attended the public schools of Brooklyn, NY and was a graduate of Job Corps in 1971. At an early age he joined New Zion AME Church. He served honorable in the United States Marine Corps from May 1973 until August 1978. He was also employed by CP & L, Midwest Stamping and Palmetto Piping. He leaves to cherish his memories: two children, Alex Wells and Lavonda Wells-Covington, both of Sumter; eleven grandchildren; two brothers, John Myers of Brooklyn, NY and Vernon Myers of Sumter; five sisters, Deloris Myers, Patricia Myers, Betty Ann Myers, Mary Myers, all of Brooklyn, NY, Bell Mahoney of Bishopville; a special cousin like a brother, Russell Williams; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Homegoing Celebration services will be held Monday, June 19, 2017, 1 p. m., from the New Zion A. M. E. Church, 78 Elliott Highway, Bishopville, with the Rev. Archie S. Temoney, Sr., pastor, eulogist. The family is receiving relatives and friends at the home of his daughter, 410 North Magnolia Street, Sumter. The Remains will be placed in the church at 12 noon. The procession will leave from the home at 12:15 p. m. Burial will be in the New Zion Memorial Gardens.
