Johnnie Mae Ray, 74, was called home to rest from her labor on Sunday evening, June 4, 2017 at Palmetto Health Richland Hospital, Columbia. Born January 8, 1943, in Lee County, she was the daughter of the late Morris and Maggie Jefferson Mickens. She joined Mt. Olive AME Church and accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior at an early age. Upon leaving South Carolina, she moved to Newark, N. J., where she joined St. Luke AME Church, Newark, and became a loyal and faithful member. She was married to Freddie “Sonny Boy” Ray of Newark, N. J. She leaves to cherish her memories: five children, Dorothy Jenkins of Dalzell, Stanley (Toni) Mickens of El Paso, TX, Mary Taylor, Barbara Mickens and Shawn Ray of Newark, NJ; eleven grandchildren; six great grandchildren; four sisters, Victoria (Henry) Jenkins of Dalzell, Emma Line Mickens and Annie McMillian of Sumter, Mary Gass of Newark, N. J.; four brothers-in-law; seven sisters-in-law; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Celebration of Life services will be held Monday, June 12, 2017, 11:00 a. m., from the Mt. Olive A. M. E. Church, 2738 Woodrow Road, Woodrow, with the Rev. Dr. Friendly J. Gadson, pastor, eulogist. The family is receiving relatives and friends at the home, 6835 Keystone Road, Dalzell. The Remains will be placed in the church at 10:00 a. m. The procession will leave from the home at 10:20 a. m. Burial will be in the Mt. Olive Memorial Garden.
