Willie James "Buster" Durant, 63,husband of Sarah Temoney Durant, died Monday, November 30, 2009 at his home.
Born May 4, 1946, in Lee County, he was the son of the late Harrison and Rosa James Boone Durant. He received his education in the public schools of Lee County. He was a graduate of Mt. Pleasant High School, Class of 1966.
Mr. Durant was a life long member of New Zion A. M. E. Church, where he served on the Trustee Board.
During his early years, he relocated to New York, where he was employed with several jobs within the state. Later he returned to South Carolina and became employed at Speedy Pak and Sims, Inc., Sumter. Willie enjoyed gardening, cooking (fish and sweet potato pies), attending sporting events, dancing, and spending joyful time with his family.
He leaves to cherish his memories: a devoted wife of 26 years, Sarah Temoney Durant; two daughters, Sheila Durant (Shontel) Hayward and Cindy Durant, all of the home; three sons, Rev. Jamie (Daphne) Hudson of Lexington, Tyrone (Ethel) Hudson of Lynchburg, and Eric (Alicia) Hudson of Bishopville; seven sisters, Rosa Lee (Robert) Carr of Baltimore, MD, Elizabeth Moses of Sumter, Willie Mae Johnson of Bishopville, Hattie Durant and Delphine Durant, both of Gainesville, FLA, Evalina Charles of Lamar, and Carrie Toney of Elliott; seven brothers, Leroy Durant of Bishopville, Wesley (Mavis) Durant of Oklahoma City, OK, David (Loretta) Durant of Garden Grove, CA, Daniel (Emily) Durant of Hookerton, NC, Harrison Durant, Jr. and Larry (Janie) Toney, both of St. Charles; a special mother-in-law, Vermell Temoney of Sumter; six grandchildren; ten brothers-in-law; ten sisters-in-law; a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by one daughter, Tonya D. Durant; four brothers, Edgar, Sr., Sam, and Dixon Durant, and Spencer Toney; and one sister, Willean Durant Hudson.
Funeral services will be held Noon, Saturday, December 5, 2009 from the New Zion A. M. E. Church, 789 Cooper Mill Road, Bishopville, with the Rev. Archie S. Temoney, Sr., pastor, eulogist, assisted by Rev. Alfred Bradley, Rev. Lucious Wilson, and Rev. William Dwayne Bruce.
The family will receive friends at the home 24 Colonial Circle, Elliott.
The Remains will be placed in the church at 11:00 a. m.
The funeral procession will leave from the home at 11:30 a. m.
Floral Bearers will be New Zion A. M. E. Church Community.
Pall Bearers will be Trustees of New Zion AME Church.
Honorary Pall Bearers will be Nephews.
Burial will be in the Beulah A. M. E. Church Yard Cemetery, Highway 76, Sumter.
