Retired MGy Sgt. Lawrence Vaughn, 70, was born April 28, 1950 in Sumter County. He was the son of the late John Arthur Vaughn and Rosa Vaughn Gaymon. He departed this life on Saturday, January 9, 2021. Lawrence was educated in the public schools of Sumter County, where he excelled in in many sports, including football where he received the nickname “Tank Vaughn”. He was a 1968 graduate of Lincoln High School. Upon graduating high school, he went on to serve 28 years, 8 months in the United States Marine Corps. He was a dedicated member of New Bethel Missionary Baptist Church, the Sumterites and Lincoln High School Preservation Alumni Association. Left to cherish his fond memories are five children: Terry Vaughn, Lakeitha Vaughn, Tammy Jennings, Victoria Gamble, and LaToya Moses. Twelve grandchildren. Funeral services will be Friday, January 15, 2021 at 10 am at New Bethel Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Willie Wright, officiating. The funeral procession the home at 9:20 a.m. Interment will follow at 1:00 pm at the Fort Jackson National Cemetery, Columbia, SC A public viewing will be held Thursday, January 14, 2021 from 1:00 pm-4:00 pm at Williams Funeral Home (masks and social distasting required). Due to COVID -19 restrictions, funeral services will be limited to family, close friends and program participants. The family is requesting no visitation at the home.
