Robert “Sonny Boy” Brunson, 85, son of the late Haskell and Hattie Gregg Brunson, was born on March 29, 1935 in Lee County. He departed this earthly life on Wednesday, April 15, 2020 at Prisma Health Tuomey Hospital, Sumter. He was educated in the public school system of Lee County. Sonny Boy, as he was affectionate known, was raised in a Christian home and in his youth he was a member of Unionville A. M. E. Church. Throughout his life, Sonny Boy wore many hats and worked for many years as a carpenter, a self-taught auto mechanic and a retired farmer. He was married to Dorothy Brunson and Bertha Brunson, whom both proceeded him in death. His memory and legacy will be cherished by: three daughters, Elouise Lawson, Marguarite (John) Sumter and Patricia Ann Lawson, all of Sumter; three daughters raised as his own, Almena Woods of Mayesville, Elizabeth (Theodore) Sharper and Betty Jean Lawson of Sumter; three sisters, Queenie Bell James of Sumter, Hattie Nance of the home and Gardenia Benjamin of Washington, DC; two brothers, Harry Lee and Albert Brunson, of Sumter; one sister-in-law, Ollie Bell Brunson of Lynchburg; a special grandson, Haskell Lawson; thirteen grandchildren; 31 great grandchildren; three great great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. The family is receiving relatives and friends at the home, 3690 Britton Brogdon Road, Sumter. Graveside services will be Tuesday, April 21, 2020 at 2 p. m. at Unionville A. M. E. Churchyard Cemetery, Rev. Alvin Webb, Pastor, Rev. Joseph Brunson, Officiating.
