Jesse McCutchen, Sr., 82, affectionately known as “Sonny Boy” was born on May 10, 1937 to the late Sam and Lottie Simon McCutchen in Wisacky. He was one of eight children, five preceded him in death. Jesse departed this life for a place of blessed peace on Saturday, December 14, 2019 at Providence Health Hospital, Columbia, after having several medical challenges. Jesse grew up in Bishopville and attended the Public School of Lee County for a short duration of time. At an early age, Jesse accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior at New Zion A. M. E. Church. In his late teenage years, Jesse met Ruby Mae Burgess of Bishopville. The two later united in holy matrimony on July 3, 1957. Jesse moved to New York City shortly after they married in hopes to have a chance at a better life. Jesse worked tirelessly to earn enough funds to bring his wife to New York. In a short amount of time, Jesse was able to send for Ruby and they settled in Harlem, NY. Their union was later blessed with three children. Jesse worked concurrently at a meat packing factory and New York Life Insurance Company. After 25 years of services with New York Life, Jesse retired in 1994. In 2000, Jesse returned to South Carolina and settled in Sumter. Jesse enjoyed singing and joined the choir at Cedar Grove Baptist Church and New Israel Baptist. Left to cherish his memories: his children, Wardell (Veronica) of Pennsylvania, Jesse Jr. and Gerard of New York; six grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; sisters, Naomi Wilson of Maryland, Janie Mae (Leroy) Hudson of New York and Ertha Lee Silveira of Missouri; a faithful sister-in-law, Barbara J. Burgess and a special cousin, Sadie McDowell, both of South Carolina; a host of nieces, nephews, other sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, cousins, other relatives and friends. The family will receive relatives and friends at the home of Barbara J. Burgess, 141 River Road, Lamar. Homegoing Celebration will be held 11 a. m., Saturday, December 21, 2019 from the New Zion A. M. E. Church, 78 Elliott Highway, Bishopville, with the Rev. Dr. Harold Conyers, pastor, the Rev. Benny McCants, eulogist. The Remains will be placed in the church at 10 a. m. The funeral procession will leave from the home at 10:20 a. m. Burial will be in the New Zion Memorial Garden, 789 Cooper Mill Road, Bishopville.
