Eddie “Mackie” Charles, Sr., 83, son of the late Irene Charles and Charlie (Nettie) Lowery, Sr., was born in Lee County on July 28, 1935.. He was reared in the home of Maggie Charles and Tim Davis. On the evening of May 15, 2019 at the Regional Medical Center, Orangeburg, God appeared and summoned Eddie Charles, Sr., home, surrounded by his family. He was educated in the public schools of Sumter County and served his country in the United States Air Force and Navy. After serving his country, he moved to Brooklyn, NY for a number of years. Later he returned back to Sumter, where he was employed with Seaboard Coast Line and Williams Funeral Home. Eddie joined and was baptized at Mt. Glory Baptist Church, Sumter. Fond and precious memories will be cherished by: his wife, Lettie H. Charles; four daughters, Berthine Gilbert and Michelle Charles of Bamberg, Barbara Goff of Rock Hill and Thelma Hester of Bladenboro, NC; three sons, Eddie Charles, Jr. of Columbia, Jeffery Charles of Fort Mill and Roger Evans of Sumter; two sisters, Rosa Lowery Jones and Dr. Mary Lowery Harvin; one brother, Councilman Thomas “Bubba” (Saratta) Lowery; one brother-in-law, Calvin Hastie all of Sumter; nineteen grandchildren; twenty six great grandchildren; four great-great grandchildren; a special and devoted granddaughter, Latarcha Hester-Wilson of Bamberg; two special nieces, Ruth Fleming, Cassandra Lowery Thompson; two special nephews, Larry (Tameria) Holman and Derrick (Frances) Hastic; two devoted cousins, Richard Williams and Ronnie Haynesworth; a host of other nieces, nephews, relatives, caregivers, Carrie Lee Champagne, Curtis Jackson and many dear friends that are deeply grieved by his passing. The family will receive relatives and friends at the home, 334 Pinson Street, Sumter. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, May 21, 2019, 1 p. m., from the John Wesley Williams Sr. Memorial Chapel, Williams Funeral Home, Inc., 821 North Main Street, Sumter, with the Rev. Dr. Ernest Jackson, officiating, eulogist. The funeral procession will leave from the home at 12:20 p. m. Burial will be in the Barnettsville Baptist Church Yard Cemetery, Manville.
