Corine Nickens Yates Grant departed this earthly life on Saturday, March 23, 2019. She was born in Sumter County on December 26, 1947 to the late Reverend Bowman Nickens Sr. and Rebecca Davis Nickens. She was a 1965 graduate of Ebenezer High School and briefly attended Voorhees College in Denmark. She was employed for many years with Santee Wateree Regional Transportation Authority and later with the Sumter County Detention Center. She was also a funeral service attendant for Williams Funeral Home, Inc. At n early age, she accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior and became a member of Grant Hill Missionary Baptist Church. Prior to her health challenges, she served faithfully as a member of the Grant Hill Adult Choir, Usher Board, YWA and Transportation Ministry. Corine truly loved people, especially children and greeted everyone with a smile. She loved her family and had a way of making everyone feel special. As a mother, grandmother, aunt and sister, she was supportive and believed in family unity. She worked diligently to ensure the memory of her brother, Staff Sgt. James Nickens who died during his second tour of Vietnam was preserved by donating his uniform to the Sumter County Veterans Museum. As a member of a “Gold Star” family and to honor him and his sacrifice, she always visited the Vietnam Memorial Traveling Wall and would rub her fingers over his name. Corine left a “Legacy of Love” and we are grateful that God blessed us to have her in our lives. Her memory will be cherished by: her children, Harold Dawson, Roosevelt (Tracy) Nelson, T. Teresa (Jerry) Washington, Travis Yates and Tony (Shaunte) Yates, Mattie Montgomery, Clotell Way, Patricia (William) Jefferson, Ethel Jones, Willie H. (Gladys) Grant, Donald Ray Grant and Timothy Grant; a daughter-in-law, Terry W. Yates; seven grandchildren; five great grandchildren; two sisters, Josephine Parker and Bernice King; eleven sisters-in-law; a special nephew, Richard Pinckney Jr.; a host of special nieces, nephews, other relatives and close friends. The family will receive relatives and friends at the home, 2865 West Brewington Road, Sumter. Funeral Services will be held Friday, March 29, 2019 at 11 a. m. at Grant Hill Missionary Baptist Church, 5420 Black River Road, Rembert, with the Rev. Clifton N. Witherspoon, pastor, eulogist. The Remains will be place in the church at 10 a. m. for viewing until the hour of service. The funeral procession will leave at 10:00 a. m. from the home. Burial will be in the Mt. Carmel Cemetery, Rembert.
